‘Fake music producer’ nets $6.5m

A Sydney man has netted a fortune of $6.5 million after posing as a music producer, police say.

The 44-year-old Turramurra man allegedly defrauded several people out of the money by falsifying documents to convince them he was a music producer.

Following investigations, police raided the man’s home on Bannockburn Rd at about 4pm (AEDT) on Friday and arrested him.

He was charged with 27 counts of fraud and refused bail.

He is due to appear at Parramatta Bail Court on Saturday.

OMG!!!!

So, like, my first reaction was, ‘erm, I wonder if I can guess who that is?’ followed by ‘geeze, maybe I’ll be getting a call from a few cashed up clients who still want some music produced by a REAL sydney music producer!!! And what I can’t fit in to my schedule, I’ll outsource to my non-scammy brethren!’

followed by ‘…if the scammed clients get their money back, that is!’ …

followed by ‘geeze, 6.5m is a LOT of music production fees. who pays that sort of money? Cosima De Vito’s parents? ‘

(insert canned laughter)

and then another thought –

hang on, $240k per client (6.5 mill divided by 27 counts of fraud, one would assume) – so who’s been going around getting $250k album budgets (presumably) out of people? On a multiple level?

Ooh! The music industry is small, so I hope this person’s identity comes out so I can know who it is!

I can’t remember the last time there was a music producer scam, let alone a sydney music producer scandal. Sydney music producers are usually such a humble bootstrapping lot.

I can’t help thinking that this fake sydney music producer is likely to be someone sort of on the fringes of the music business who could plausibly kind of…. talk the talk.

Maybe a record exec on a backhander. ‘Because I am in this position, I not only know all the best producers but if you give this money to me personally right now, I will make sure the record does XYZ…’

ooh, how the mind wanders.

Ah, industry backhanders; that’s a whole ‘nother story. For another post, another day. Luv youze.

Hey Barbie,

Very interesting!

When you claim fraud, you have to be willing to open your books to prove your claim. I bet there are a bunch more than this 27 who simply aren’t willing to come forward!

Have a good one, Queen B!
Michael
